Michael Aeby holds a PhD and MA from the University of Basel, where he specialised in African history and peace research, and a BA in History from the University of Fribourg. With transitional governance and regional conflict management as his lead themes, Michael’s research is concerned with power-sharing, institutional reform, mediation, regional security, as well as civil society and peace-building. His geographical expertise relates to the Southern African Development Community region, the crisis in Zimbabwe and South African peace-making. Before joining the Statehood Programme, Michael was a visiting research fellow at the Department of Political Studies of the University of the Witwatersrand, the History Department of the University of Zimbabwe, and the Centre for Humanities Research of the University of the Western Cape. Moreover, he did an internship at the Democracy and Governance Programme of the South African Human Science Research Council.
