Switzerland Chairs the OSCE in 2014

Switzerland takes over Chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in 2014. The Swiss Chairmanship is guided by the motto "Creating a Security Community for the Benefit of Everyone". Switzerland wishes to make a tangible contribution to:

  • Fostering security and stability: Switzerland aims to contribute to conflict resolution, namely in the Western Balkans and South Caucasus, through dialogue and confidence-building measures.
  • Improving people's lives: Switzerland seeks to ensure that all OSCE States fully implement their obligations to protect and uphold human rights.
  • Strenghtening the OSCE's capacity to act: Switzerland supports the ongoing reform process intended to help the OSCE react faster and more effectively to crises, including by building OSCE capacities in conflict mediation.

The Role of swisspeace

swisspeace is accompanying the Swiss OSCE Chairmanship in 2014, supporting projects to strengthen OSCE dialog with civil society.

The annual OSCE Ministerial Council meeting will be hosted by Switzerland in Basel in December 2014. Parallel to this event, swisspeace is organizing a civil society conference in close cooperation with the Civic Solidarity Platform. In order to also facilitate domestic dialog, swisspeace is working closely with the Swiss NGO Working Group for the OSCE, which is coordinated by humanrights.ch.

Together with the OSCE institutions, Switzerland is organizing four regional workshops on civil society with representatives of NGOs, academia and think tanks in South-Eastern Europe, Southern Caucasus, Central Asia and Vienna. swisspeace is assisting the Swiss Chairmanship with these workshops, helping to lay the ground for the above-mentioned civil society conference to be held in Basel parallel to the OSCE Ministerial Council meeting in December 2014.
