swisspeace research on Sudan

swisspeace research profile

swisspeace's research on Sudan aims to be practically relevant, empirically innovative, and locally rooted. Covering issues related to the dynamics of war and peace in Sudan, swisspeace brings to bear an approach that emphasizes field research and collaboration with partner universities and researchers in Sudan.

In the 1990s, as part of its Environment and Conflicts Project (ENCOP), swisspeace studied how environmental degradation fuels conflict in Western Sudan, years before the international spotlight focused on Darfur. More recently the NCCR North-South Working Package No. 1 on Governance and Conflict, researchers associated with swisspeace examined violent land conflict as well as processes of negotiating statehood in Southern Sudan. swisspeace's research on Sudan is also supported through the ProDoc Programme on Global Change, Innovation and Sustainable Development funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).

Two researchers at swisspeace currently work on Sudan: Martina Santschi is an anthropologist and her doctoral research focuses on local dynamics and manifestations of the emerging state in Southern Sudan. She is supervised by Prof. Hans-Rudolf Wicker at the University of Bern. David Lanz is a PhD student at the University of Basel under the supervision of Prof. Laurent Goetschel. He studies the international response to the Darfur conflict, with a focus on the role of international norms. Previously, Ahmed Mey Eltayeb studied national and local mechanisms to manage environmental conflicts in Sudan. She was advised by Prof. Atta El-Battahani  at the University of Khartoum.
